The Myth of Missing Out: Balancing Family and Vision

I don’t think I’ve ever missed my kids’ activities. The concerts, the games, the school nights—I’ve always been there. But here’s the truth no one talks about: just because you’re there doesn’t mean it’s easy.

This blog is for educational and inspirational purposes only—it’s not medical advice. And if you enjoy reflections like this, make sure you subscribe to Glow Notes™, our weekly newsletter filled with rituals, behind-the-scenes, and wellness freebies.

There’s this myth floating around that moms who chase dreams or build businesses are “missing out.” That their kids are sitting in bleachers with empty seats beside them, while mom is off hustling somewhere else. For me, that hasn’t been the story. I’ve shown up. I’ve been present. But the truth is, presence doesn’t always equal perfection.

Behind the cheers and smiles, there’s a constant juggle most people never see. Dinner still needs cooking. The laundry doesn’t fold itself. Homework has to get done. Emails pile up. And through it all, you’re sitting in the bleachers, smiling, clapping, recording the moment, all while mentally carrying a backpack no one else even knows you’re holding.

This invisible juggle doesn’t mean I’m absent—it means I’m stretched thin. It doesn’t cancel my presence, but it shapes the way I show up. And sometimes, that weight feels heavy.

It also looks different depending on who’s watching. My 22-year-old son sees me now, and he’s proud. He gets that I’m building something bigger, even if he didn’t always understand it before. My 11-year-old daughter? She doesn’t care about the big picture yet—she just wants more of me, right here, right now. My husband supports me, but he doesn’t always see the full mental load I’m carrying. And my parents and friends? They love me, but because they’ve never been where I’m going, it doesn’t always make sense to them.

That’s the reality of motherhood and entrepreneurship. You can be fully present and still feel like you’re missing out in a different way. You can carry mom guilt even when you’re there. And you can wonder whether you’re modeling hustle culture—or showing your kids what resilience and intentional living really look like.

Here’s what I’ve learned: you don’t have to be perfect. Presence is about intention, not perfection. Sometimes it’s messy. Sometimes it feels lonely. But it’s always worth it.
