When Survival Mode Becomes Too Heavy: A Reset Before You Break Down
We don’t usually break down because of one huge crisis. More often, it’s the little things that pile up until suddenly… we snap.
For me, it shows up in the ordinary moments. Like last week, when my daughter and I went to the store. Before we got out of the car, I was checking my YouTube videos. She looked at me and said, “Mom, I thought we were going to the store, not watching your videos.” That cut deep, because she was right.
Or the times when one of my kids tells me something important, but I’m half-distracted by business emails. Later, when I say, “I don’t remember you telling me that,” they’ll roll their eyes and remind me, “You were probably on your phone.”
These aren’t dramatic breakdowns. They’re micro-moments — small red flags that tell us the load we’re carrying is too heavy.
And maybe you’ve felt them too. Crying in the shower so no one hears. Snapping at your kids for something small. Lying awake at night doing mental math while your family sleeps peacefully.
The truth is, survival mode has a way of convincing us that it’s normal. But it isn’t sustainable. It’s like driving with your gas light on for weeks — you can move for a while, but eventually, the engine will stop.
So how do you reset before you hit the wall?
🌿 3 Resets Before You Break Down
1. Name the Load Out Loud.
Say it: “I’m carrying too much.” It sounds simple, but acknowledging it out loud turns invisible weight into something you can manage.
2. Choose a 5-Minute Anchor.
Sometimes I step outside barefoot, close my eyes, and just breathe. It’s grounding — literally — and it resets my nervous system.
3. Create a Micro-Sabbath.
Carve out one hour a week where you’re not a mom, not a nurse, not an entrepreneur — just you. Journaling, walking, resting. The pause doesn’t erase the stress, but it changes how you carry it.
These resets matter, because survival mode is not meant to be a lifestyle.
